During the past 69 years, the Committee has promoted sportsmanship and awarded over $305,000.00 in scholarships to deserving high school athletes. This annual dinner, held at the start of the Indiana High School Basketball Sectional Tournament, has attained status as the premiere athletic social event for the players and patrons of the Calumet Region. This year’s event marks our 69th consecutive dinner and again promises to be special.

Buoyed by the success of our last eight in-person dinners, the Committee will continue hosting our gathering at The Halls of St. George in Schererville. The dinner is scheduled for Monday, February 19, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s keynote speaker is Robbie Hummel. Hummel is an American former professional basketball player and current TV commentator. He played college basketball for Purdue University and for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA. In 2019, Hummel was named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

The cost of a single sponsorship this year remains $75.00. The price covers our meal costs as well as allows us to fund our scholarship awards. Sponsorship provides advertising in the program, a terrific meal, camaraderie, and the opportunity to hear Hummel’s message to today’s athletes.

Extra guest tickets are also $75.00, the same as before. Corporate Sponsorships are available, as well.

We expect a large crowd so we advise you to commit early. Sportsmanship and scholarships are our goal. The patronage of successful business-people, like you, helps these athletes to become better prepared for the future. The success of our dinner and the scholarships are the result of your patronage. The Committee thanks you.

Sincerely,
John J. Doherty, Chairman

Special Guest Speaker

Robbie Hummel

Now one of the nation’s premier college basketball analysts, 2007 graduate Robbie Hummel gained insight to the game early in life while rising up through the ranks of the Valpo basketball system. Hummel grew to 6-foot-8 by his sophomore year, when he teamed with fellow big man and classmate Scott Martin to form one of the best tandems in school history. The Vikings went 66-9 in those three seasons, advancing to the regional championship each year under Hall of Fame coach Bob Punter.

Hummel was an Indiana All Star (2007), an Indiana Junior All Star (2006), made first team All-State as a senior and was the 2007 Duneland Athletic Conference co-MVP along with Martin. As teammates, they rank third in school history with a combined 2,247 points. Hummel sits at No. 20 on the all-time scoring list with 882 points, an 11.9 point per game average.

During his high school years, he also participated in tennis as a freshman and sophomore, and track as a senior, winning the sectional championship in the 400 meter dash. He moved on to a stellar career at Purdue, despite battling back and knee injuries including sitting out the 2010-11 season. In his four active seasons, the Boilermakers had a record of 103-38 which included back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2009-10).

He was selected as a first-team All-Big Ten player three times, the first in Purdue history since Rick Mount in the 1960s. Hummel was also three times named an All American, once as a 2nd Team State Farm All American (2010) and twice as an AP Honorable Mention All American (2010, 2012). He finished his collegiate career with 1,772 points, ninth in school history, along with 862 rebounds, tied for fourth in school history, 268 assists, 132 steals and 112 blocks and ended his career named as the Lowes Senior Class Award winner, given to the nations top senior men’s basketball student athlete.

Hummel was drafted 58th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2012 NBA Draft. He appeared in 98 games over two seasons, but again suffered more injuries.

His professional career also included overseas stints in Spain, Italy, and Russia. After retiring from 5 on 5, Hummel then excelled on the international stage in 3 on 3 basketball. In 2019, he was on the gold medal winning 3×3 World Cup team for the United States, claiming the nation’s first ever gold in the event and was named the event’s most valuable player. That led to Hummel being named USA Basketball’s 2019 male athlete of the year.

Hummel started his broadcasting career in 2017, and he is now recognized as a top color commentator while working for NBC, Fox, the Big Ten Network, Westwood One Radio, and Sirius XM.
